Tribute to Merle Haggard Coming to Wentworth Recreation Center
Country music fans, mark your calendars! This September, the Wentworth Recreation Centre will host a special tribute to the legendary Merle Haggard, featuring acclaimed Canadian country artist Doug Patriquin and his six-piece band. This is a show you won’t want to miss.
Doug Patriquin: Nova Scotia’s Own Country Star
Born and raised in Nova Scotia, in the Oxford area, Doug Patriquin has been steeped in country music from a young age. He began performing at just five years old and was already playing gigs by the age of 14. In 2005, Doug relocated to Alberta, discovering its reputation as the “Little Nashville” of Canada—a place where country music thrives and artists are celebrated.
Doug’s performances are known for their authenticity and energy, whether he’s playing solo or backed by his talented band. Audiences can expect a night filled with classic country sounds, heartfelt vocals, and the kind of award-winning musicianship that has earned Doug a loyal following across the country. His Merle Haggard tribute has been praised at festivals and venues throughout Canada, capturing the spirit and soul of “The Hag” himself.
Honouring a Country Legend
Merle Haggard, born in Bakersfield, California, was a pioneer of the Bakersfield sound and one of country music’s most influential voices. With hits like “Okie from Muskogee,” “Mama Tried,” and “The Fightin’ Side of Me,” Haggard’s music spoke to working-class Americans and resonated with fans around the world. His songs often reflected the struggles and triumphs of everyday life, earning him a reputation as the “working class poet” of country music.
Doug Patriquin’s tribute show brings Haggard’s music to life, offering fans a chance to relive the classics and celebrate the legacy of a true icon. Whether you’re a lifelong Haggard fan or new to his music, this event promises an evening of nostalgia, great music, and community spirit.
